Hong Kong’s container throughput in the first half of 2008 reached 12.07 million TEU, 4.9% more than 1H June 2007. The throughput for the Hong Kong port in 1H 2007 reached 11.6 million TEU, 2.5% more than Jan-June 2006. Container throughput at the Hong Kong port for June 2007 was nearly 19% more than June 2006, due to the enforcement of the electronic manifest declaration in June 2006 that saw a surge of container traffic in May.

The Hong Kong port container throughput for the month of June totalled 2.11mn TEU, 4% more than June 2007. Over at the Shenzhen ports, nearly 1.76 million TEUs were handled at the ports there in June 2008, 3.5% more than June 2007. For the first half of 2008, 10.2 million TEU were handled at the Shenzhen ports, 7.2% more than in Jan-June 2007.

It has been pointed out that throughput growth at south China’s Shenzhen port has slowed to half last year’s rate, as its major cargo source, Guangdong province, recorded below-average growth in the first half.
