The Hong Kong port handled 23.24 million TEUs in January to December
2006, according to figures released by the Port Development Council,
where some of the figures are still provisional for November and
December. The total is 2.8% more than the port's total throughput
in 2005.
The Shenzhen ports clocked in 18.5 million TEUs, at a 14% growth.
According to published reports, the Shanghai port handled 21.71
million TEUs at the year-end, rising 20.1% over 2005.
New records were again set at the Hong Kong International Airport
(HKIA) in 2006, with cargo throughput growing 5.2% over 2005,
to reach 3.58 million tonnes. The number of passengers using HKIA
also rose by 9.1% in 2006 over 2005, to reach 44.5 million. Aircraft
movements increased 6.4% to 280,490.
