The Hong Kong port's container throughput reversed its negative trend for the months of Feb and March when it averaged –7% growth, to register a 5.9% increase in throughput for the month of April. In total, 1.9mn TEU were handled at the Hong Kong port for April. In that month, the Kwai Chung container terminals handled 1.17mn TEU at an increase of 12.1% over the same month last year. The statistics are estimated by the Hong Kong Port Development Council (www.pdc.gov.hk) based on submissions by the Census and Statistics Department (www.info.gov.hk/censtatd/), Marine Department (www.mardep.gov.hk), and the Hong Kong Shippers' Council.
Meanwhile, the ports in Shenzhen handled 1.3mn TEU in April, at a growth rate of 21.3%. Cumulatively, since January 05, some 4.8mn TEU have been handled at the Shenzhen ports, at a growth rate of 24%. Nearly 7mn TEU have been handled at the Hong Kong port from January till April this year, at an increase of 0.3% over the same period last year.
