Some 5.3mn TEUs have been handled at the Hong Kong port for the first quarter of 2005, at a slight growth of 1.4%. In January, the Hong Kong
port's throughput registered a strong 10.1% growth over the same period last year. In February, the growth slowed down to 2.6% over the same period last year, and in March, 1.8mn TEUs in total were handled at the Hong Kong port at a growth of –7.2% over the same period last year. The reverse trend in March is due to a higher base of comparison for March last year, when the intra-Asia trade in the midstream surged by about 40%. There is some consolidation this year and growth will likely be lower than last year.
Meanwhile, cargo throughput at the Shenzhen ports continues to show strong growth, registering a rise of 25% for the first quarter of 2005, handling a total of 3.5mn TEUs for January-March. In March, the Shenzhen ports handled 1.2mn TEUs at a growth rate of 17.7% over the same period last year. |
