The volume of total goods exports in May fell by 12.6% and that of imports dropped 16.2% compared to May 2008, according to the latest figures from the Census & Statistics Department. The volume of goods re-exports fell 11.8% while that of domestic exports dropped 35.5%.

The decreases were reflected in the container throughput at the Hong Kong port which saw a static throughput of 1.8mn TEU in the months of both May and June. The May throughput was 12.1% less than May 2008, while the throughput in June 2009 was 15.6% lower than in June 2008. For the first half of the year, from Jan-June 2009, a total of 9.9mn TEU was handled at the Hong Kong port, 17.3% less than the same eix-month period last year.

Over at Shenzhen, the ports handled 1.4mn TEU for June 2009, which was 19.8% less than the same month last year. In the first half of 2009, a total of 8.08mn TEUs were handled by the Shenzhen ports, 20.7% less than the same first six-month period last year.
